Before We Leave
Before We Leave by Balancing Monkey Games came out on Steam in May 2021. It is a cozy city builder about Peeps rebuilding civilisation across planets, with giant space whales as a threat. Many Beyond These Stars reviewers played it first, and opinions on which game is better are split.
Pick it if you want the same tone with a simpler economy. Our Before We Leave comparison covers what carried over to the new game.
Timberborn
Timberborn by Mechanistry is a city builder starring beavers, with version 1.0 released in March 2026. It leans on terraforming and flowing water that you redirect to keep land fertile. One Steam reviewer singled out those mechanics as the strongest resemblance.
Timberborn is harder on drought and has no companion creature or narrative. It suits players who enjoy shaping terrain more than following a story.
Ixion
Ixion by Bulwark Studios puts your city aboard a space station travelling between star systems. The idea of a moving home in space is the shared hook. It is grimmer and more survival-focused, with a strict story campaign.
Choose it if Kewa’s journey was your favourite part but you want more danger.
Frostpunk
Frostpunk by 11 bit studios is a survival city builder set in a frozen world. A Steam reviewer listed it alongside Ixion and Surviving the Aftermath when describing Beyond These Stars. It is far harsher, with hard laws and constant cold, so treat it as a big step up in pressure.
Surviving the Aftermath
Surviving the Aftermath by Iceflake Studios is a post-apocalyptic colony builder published by Paradox Interactive. It shares production chains and expeditions beyond your settlement. Like Frostpunk, it is more dangerous than Beyond These Stars.
Whiskerwood
Whiskerwood by Minakata Dynamics is published by Hooded Horse, the same publisher as Beyond These Stars. Your mice build a city under cat overlords, with intricate production chains. A Steam reviewer grouped it with Timberborn for terraforming and fluid water.
How to choose
Pick Before We Leave for the same cozy tone, Timberborn for terrain and water, or Ixion for a city in space. Choose Frostpunk or Surviving the Aftermath only if you want more danger. If you have not tried Beyond These Stars itself, the free demo is the quickest comparison.
